With this December issue, Diepgang becomes a bilingual magazine. The printed magazine now consists of two sections: from one side it is Diepgang; turn it over, and it becomes DeepEnd. Online, the magazine will be published as two separate editions. In this way, the editorial team hopes to better serve the international composition of today’s maritime crews.

During the SPWO conference, the “Practical Guide for Care after High Mental Impact Situations (HiMIS)” was formally presented to SPWO Chairman Govert van Oord and Honorary Chairman Joep Athmer.
The guide provides practical guidance for shipboard management, project management, and human resources professionals in delivering effective initial psychosocial support following a high-impact incident on board a vessel or at a project site.
Over the coming months, the guide will be distributed to companies throughout the dredging and offshore industry. It is also available as a digital publication.

On Monday, 18 November, SPWO hosted a successful conference at Building 1 of Royal Boskalis in Papendrecht. The event was well attended, with more than 40 participants representing various companies from the Dutch dredging industry. Following a welcome by SPWO Chairman Govert van Oord, the theme “Connection and Belonging” was explored from several different perspectives.
The afternoon was chaired by Fred Omvlee, who first introduced Geertje Peneder of TheYoungForce. She spoke about generational differences and the opportunities for building stronger connections between generations in the workplace. Next, former dredging pastor Jabuk Koopmans reflected on moments of deep human connection and the vulnerability that often accompanies such relationships. Unfortunately, guest speaker Cyrille Wismans was unable to attend due to illness. In his place, dredging pastor Stefan Francke shared several insights from the world of football coaching, including the well-known forming–storming–norming–performing–adjourning model of team development.
Throughout the afternoon there was ample opportunity for discussion, with lively questions from the audience, as well as informal conversations over coffee and later during the networking reception.
At the conclusion of the event, Chairman Govert van Oord and Honorary Chairman Joep Athmer received the first copies of SPWO’s new publication, “Practical Guide for Care after High Mental Impact Situations (HiMIS).”
Overall, it was a highly successful afternoon that certainly deserves a follow-up.
The airport chaplaincy at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport provides many travellers and employees with a place of peace, reflection, and support, centred around its Silence Centre, made possible in part by the dedication of a committed team of volunteers. On Saturday, 12 October, Stefan was invited to contribute to the chaplaincy’s training day on “Working with Cultural Differences.” It was encouraging to see meaningful connections being made between different contexts of pastoral care and to share experiences across these diverse settings.

The latest edition of Diepgang (in Dutch) is currently being distributed to ships, and the digital edition is now also available.
This is the final Dutch-only issue. From the next edition onwards, Diepgang will be published as a bilingual magazine in both Dutch and English.
This issue is dedicated to the “next generation” — young people preparing for a career at sea.
